Current Events in Thelema (6/14/2008)

source: http://www.thelemicstudies.com/?q=node/65

* Fernando Pessoa's correspondence with Crowley being auctioned - The Independent has reported that Portugal's literary community is angry over the sale of rare documents. These include voluminous correspondence between the famous poet Fernando Pessoa and Aleister Crowley. "When the poet died in obscurity in 1935, he left a trunk full of documents that included extensive correspondence with the eccentric English astrologist and magician Aleister Crowley, a practitioner of the occult said to have inspired satanism in Britain. Portugal's National Library fiercely opposes the private sale of documents considered vital to the nation's literary heritage, and warns it will take all legal measures to stop the sale and dispersal of the archive, the Lisbon daily Publico reports... The dossier includes voluminous correspondence with Crowley, and hundreds of pages of an unfinished novel about Crowley's faked suicide." Click here to read the full article at the Independent.

* "Fresh Fever From the Skies" released - A new book by IAO131, the creator & editor of the Journal of Thelemic Studies, has been released entitled "Fresh Fever From the Skies." The book includes many contemporary essays including "Thelemic Values: A New View of Morality," "Psychological Commentary on Liber AL vel Legis," and "The Manifesto of Ra-Hoor-Khuit." The book "Fresh Fever From the Skies" is available here.

* Secret Agent 666 by Richard B. Spence released - Richard B. Spence has released a new book entitled "Secret Agent 666: Aleister Crowley, British Intelligence, and the Occult. LAShTAL.com reports Using documents gleaned from American, British, French, and Italian archives, Secret Agent 666 reveals that Crowley's clandestine service linked him to the sinking of the Lusitania, a plot to overthrow the government of Spain, the thwarting of Irish and Indian nationalist conspiracies, the Communist International, and the 1941 flight of Rudolf Hess. Author Richard Spence, a professor of History at the University of Idaho, argues that Crowley--in his own unconventional way--was a patriotic Englishman who endured years of public vilification in part to mask his role as a secret agent. Dr. Spence has appeared on the History Channel and as a speaker at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC. He has been interviewed on Radio Liberty and other media outlets and has been a consultant and interviewee for documentary films produced by the Russian Cultural Foundation..." The book "Secret Agent 666" can be found here on Amazon.com.

* HeruTV launches - A new official video channel of the Journal of Thelemic Studies has launched on YouTube called HeruTV. Currently there are two videos uploaded including meditations on "Liber Cheth" and "Liber Tzaddi." The HeruTV YouTube channel can be found here.

CESNUR 2008 Aleister Crowley Papers

sources: LAShTAL.com; Thelema.nu

The 2008 International Conference by the Center for Studies on New Religions has posted various essays from its proceeding online. Click here to access these essays.

Included in these proceedings on 'New Religions' are various essays focusing on Aleister Crowley and his legacy.

* The Birth of the New Aeon: Magick and Mysticism of Thelema from the perspective of Postmodern A/Theology by Gordan Djurdjevic
* The Scientific Aeon: Magic, Science and Psychology in Crowley’s Scientific Illuminism by Egil Asprem
* Crowleyan Echoes: Baraka and Fantasy by Dave Evans
* The Bhikkhu and the Magus: Exploring Allan Bennett’s Influence on Aleister Crowley by John L. Crow

As Patriarch156 writes on LAShTAL.com,

"The study of Crowley as a legitimate subject open for a balanced and fairer approach, is undergoing a revolution in academia, entirely in line with the goals set forth by Crowley nearly a century ago in the Blue Equinox. Crowley received his own panel this time, for the first time in history. This is an important first step and perhaps as our community matures his ideas and methods may receive interest from other places as well, and not merely from the history of ideas and religion."

Current Events in Thelema (3/4/2008)

Here are some updates on what is happening in the world of Thelema:

Babalon Rising Festival 2008 - "The Babalon Rising Festival is a place for occultists of all kinds to come together to discuss and perform magick and ritual, and to live the law of Thelema in a clothing-optional, primitive camping environment. Babalon Rising encourages self-exploration, spontaneous ritual, and lively magick... Babalon Rising will have daily rituals, including Liber Resh vel Helios, The Gnostic Mass, and Saturday night's famous (infamous?) Feast of the Beast. The festival site includes hot showers, skinny-dipping facilities, limited electricity, a performance stage, holy shrines, private fire pits, and an on-site hot food vendor. We encourage festival-goers to bring a tent, sunscreen, and personal snacks and beverages. Clothing is optional! Vending is FREE with a regular paid admission to the festival." It is an age 18+ event occuring June 5 - 8, 2008 at Our Haven Nature Sanctuary in French Lick, Indiana. Learn more at their website http://www.babalonrising.org

Twenty Years of Studies in Aleister Crowley - The Center for Studies on New Religions presents TWENTY YEARS OF STUDIES ON ALEISTER CROWLEY at its 2008 International Conference (17 April 2008 - London School of Economics). The presentations include "Painting Dead Souls: New Discoveries on Aleister Crowley and Art" by Marco Pasi (University of Amsterdam), "The Scientific Aeon: Magic, Science and Psychology in Crowley’s Scientific Illuminism" by Egil Asprem (University of Amsterdam), "The Initiatory System of the AA" by Henrik Bogdan (Göteborg University), "The Bhikku and the Magus: Exploring Allan Bennett’s Influence on Aleister Crowley" by John L. Crow (University of Amsterdam), "Crowleyan Echoes: Baraka and Fantasy" by Dave Evans (Bristol University), and "Legitimization Strategies and Charismatic Control in Thelema" by Martin P. Australian OTO lawsuit update

source: LAShTAL.com

The Australian O.T.O. Religious Vilification action [of] the past few years has concluded. The authors of the gaiaguys.net website, Dyson Devine and Vivienne Legg, were released from jail upon undertaking not to repeat, or assist others to publish, vilifying statements about Ordo Templi Orientis.

The Court had previously described the numerous comments by Devine and Legg on their website that O.T.O. was a paedophile and satanic network enjoying high level protection in the state of Victoria as "bizarre"; it found that Devine and Legg were guilty of inciting hatred, contempt, revulsion and ridicule of O.T.O. and its members on the grounds of their Thelemic beliefs, activities and practices.

The Court had previously determined that O.T.O. was a lawful religious organization, and Thelema a lawful religion.

While the Court acknowledged that "the damage has been done" and that the site and the allegations have been copied and spread over the Internet, O.T.O. is satisfied with the outcome, which has sent a clear and highly publicized message to the Australian community that the O.T.O. is a lawful and reputable organization which will defend itself, Thelema, and the rights and beliefs of its membership. We'll have to see how things go from here; we thank our counsel who went above and beyond the call of duty; we thank the international community who got behind our actions and gave us support and encouragement; and we thank our members - many of whom as a result of the impact of the vilifying materials on their personal and professional lives, have had to demonstrate true courage in the face of real adversity.
